Guidelines for Authors We expect that manuscripts have not been, and will not be, submitted elsewhere for publication during our review period. Not following this will be a serious violation of the code of conduct in our profession, and we may inform editors of other relevant journals of such incidents. Quick tips for first submissions (-) Send your paper as email attachment to popecon@iza.org (-) We prefer files in PDF-, Word-, or Postscript-Format, but shall be able to process other popular file formats as well. (-) Please send your paper as a single document including tables and figures. This means, it should be one PDF-File, or one Word-File, ... AND NOT a zipped File containing different files for text, tables, figures, etc. Electronic supplementary materials need to be sent as a separate file. (-) Your initial submission does not need to be in the style of the Journal of Population Economics. (-) After the first processing of the paper and forwarding it to the responsible Editor, you will receive an confirmation of receipt by email including your password for the online-check. If you do not hear from us (at least an out-of-office-reply) within one week, you should contact popecon@iza.org. (-) Because we introduced a centralized handling for submissions since the beginning of 2002, please do not directly contact the responsible Editor (if you submitted your paper after 2002). All correspondence should go through the Editorial Office. Official Guidelines The author(s) transfer(s) the copyright to his/their article to Springer-Verlag effective if and when the article is accepted for publication. The copyright covers the exclusive and unlimited rights to reproduce and distribute the article in any form of reproduction (printing, electronic media or any other form); it also covers translation rights for all languages and countries. For U.S. authors the copyright is transferred to the extent transferable. It is a fundamental condition that submitted papers have not been published and will not be published elsewhere without the publisher's permission. Please send your paper as email-attachment to popecon@iza.org. We prefer files in PDF-, Word-, or Postscript-Format, but shall be able to process other popular file formats as well. Please send your paper as a single document including tables and figures. Electronic supplementary materials need to be sent as a separate document. To facilitate communication between the authors, editors and the publisher, the author should furnish his or her e-mail address on the title page of the manuscript. Authors are requested to follow the technical instructions. Authors preparing their accepted papers with TEX are encouraged to ask for Springer-Verlag's TEX macropackages, called PJour1g (plain TEX) and LJour1 (Latex) either by letter to Springer-Verlag or by e-mail to svserv@vax.ntp.springer.de - Springer-Verlag's e-mail server address. This message must contain one (several) of the following commands for PJour1g: get/tex/plain/pjour1g.zip, for LJour1: get/tex/latex/ljour1.zip. If authors have not used Springer's macros they should, nevertheless, send in their disc. They must then make sure to include any macrodefinitions they have used. Springer-Verlag will decide on a case by case basis whether it makes sense economically to use the author's electronic files. When preparing accepted papers for the journal, please note the following points: 1. The form and content of the manuscript should be checked carefully to exclude the need for corrections at the proof stage. The costs involved in making any subsequent changes in the text will be charged to the authors. Manuscripts must be typed on one side of the paper only and with wide margins. References and legends should be typed on separate sheets. 2. The manuscript cover page must provide (in this order): the title, names and complete addresses of all authors including e-mail of the corresponding author only, abstract (not more than 100 words), JEL classification numbers and keywords (not more than three each). A footnote to the title should indicate the author to whom correspondence (e.g. page proofs) is to be sent. 3. The list of references may include only publications cited in the text. The references have to be listed in alphabetical order under the first author's name. Citations in the text must be by author and year. Journal papers: (1) names and initials of all authors; (2) year in parentheses; (3) full title of cited paper; (4) title of journal; (5) arabic volume and issue numbers; (6) first and last page number; e.g.: Heckman JJ, Walker JR (1990) The Third Birth in Sweden. Journal of Population Economics 3(4):235-275 Books: (1) names and initials of all authors or editors; (2) year of publication in parentheses; (3) full title; (4) edition; (5) publisher; (6) place of publication; e.g.: Becker GS (1991) A Treatise on the Family. Enlarged Edition, Harvard University Press, Cambridge MA Articles in books: (1) names and initials of all authors; (2) year of publication in parentheses; (3) full title of article; (4) names and initials of all editors; (5) full title of book; (6) edition; (7) publisher; (8) place of publication; (9) first and last page number; e.g.: Chiswick BR (1994) The Performance of Immigrants in the United States Labor Market. In: Giersch H (ed) Economic Aspects of International Migration. Springer, Berlin Heidelberg New York 95-114 4. Figures have to be of high technical quality and must have a short title. They are to be numbered consecutively and must be on separate pages at the end of the manuscript. The desired position of figures should be indicated on the respective manuscript pages (‘Insert figure 1 here’). 5. Tables are to be numbered separately from the illustrations. Each table must have a short title. Footnotes to tables have to be marked by lower case letters. Tables are to be numbered consecutively and must be on separate pages at the end of the manuscript. The desired position of figures should be indicated on the respective manuscript pages (‘Insert table 1 here’). 6. Formulae are to be numbered consecutively on the right-hand side of the page. 7. It has to be checked whether the listed references are up-to-date. (e.g. have discussion papers been published in the meanwhile?) 8. In case the paper has been refereed, the anonymous referee(s) must be mentioned in the acknowledgements. This is a condition for publication. 9. For the production process we need the final version (-) in the file format the paper has been writen (Word, Tex, ...). In case of separate files (e.g. for text, figures, tables), we would be very grateful if you could send it as an archive (e.g. .zip). (-) AND as one single PDF-file including tables, figures and formulae (-) The electronic supplementary material should be separated from the manuscript itself and be sent as an extra file, both word-file and PDF-file. The printed manuscript will provide a link to the supplementary material on the title page in a footnote. 10. Two sets of page proof are sent to the author. 11. Fifty (50) offprints of each paper will be supplied free of charge. Additional offprints may be ordered at cost price when the page proofs are returned; the order form must be sent with the corrected proofs. |
